Status
Shingle Oak is distributed from Iowa south to Louisiana, east to North Carolina, and north to Massachusetts. It is a medium to large tree.
Description
Leaves are ovate and widest near the middle, with entire margins that may be slightly wavy. The leaf tip has a single bristle. Upper leaf surface is dark green and shiny, lower surface whitish-green. Bark is brown, and, on older trunks, has shallow fissures and low ridges. Acorns occur singly or in pairs. The cup encloses up to half of the nut, with is small and nearly round, brown with faint strips and concentric rings around the apex.
Where To Find
In Maryland, Shingle Oak is local in distribution, occurring in rich woods and bottomlands (Brown and Brown, 1972).
