The housefly-sized Amoebaleria defessais is probably the most common and widespread species of cave-associated Diptera. It has been collected from seventeen caves in Washington, Allegany and Garrett Counties. Specimens are especially abundant during the warm months, but a few have been seen in winter (Franz & Slifer, 1971).
