A male Carolina Grasshopper with mite infestation in Allegany Co., Maryland (7/12/2012). Per Richard, "The red blobs are the parasitengone larvae of Erythraeid Mites (family Erythraeidae). If you enlarge the photograph you can see that the mites are attached along the wing veins and are engorging themselves on the blood of the grasshopper. Once full the mites will drop off the grasshopper much as an engorged tick would on a human. The grasshopper was paying a price for being infested with these mites -- it was only about 2/3rds the size of a normal Carolina Grasshopper."
